Garret Jones has been named the new education
specialist for the Robert E. Lee Soil and Water
Conservation District. Garret grew up in Brevard,
North Carolina spending most of his formative years
fishing, backpacking and climbing in Pisgah National
Forest. He volunteered with multiple organizations
in the area including the US Forest Service and the
Carolina Mountain Club doing trail building,
maintenance as well as interpretive work. In 1998,
Garret graduated with a B.S. degree in Natural
Resources/Ecosystem Assessment from North Carolina
State University. Later that year, he began working
with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources
Commission, division of Conservation Education at
the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education. He held
several positions at the developing center and in
2001 was asked to transfer to the site of the new
Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education to begin
development of that program and facility. Garret
worked as an Education Specialist and later was
promoted to the Program Coordinator position for the
OBCWE in 2003. While working at the OBCWE, Garret
met his wife Christian, and moved to Amherst County
Virginia in September 2004. He then worked as the
Facilities Manager at Amazement Square in Lynchburg
until 2008.
Garret is a strong believer in the importance of experiential
education in teaching the principles of
conservation. Its one thing to show a student a
picture of an insect or animal and its a completely
different thing for that student to actually handle
it. The interest level and absorption of
information is greatly increased when the student
can engage as many senses as possible while learning
about the importance of natural resources
conservation and the interconnectivity of the
natural world.
In his spare time, Garret enjoys fishing, hiking,
gardening and spending time with his wife and their
two boxers.
